This indoor farm could be key for food production in space. German Aerospace Center (GAC) engineers are developing plant cultivation technology for crew members on board the International Space Station. Part of the European Union Research and Innovation Action’ Horizon 2020 program, EDEN ISS is a four-year project with a goal to “advance controlled environment agriculture technologies beyond state-of-the-art.”
EDEN ISS focuses on the ground demonstration of these plant-cultivating technologies and ultimately, safe food production in space. This is especially the case for human space exploration vehicles of the future as well as planetary outposts. As the human exploration of other planets continues, supplying edible food for astronauts will become increasingly important, as will closed-loop food cultivation systems.
