Tourists visiting the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art – America’s largest art museum and the world’s second most visited – will be required to pay a mandatory entry fee of £18 ($25) from March (while locals will continue to be allowed to offer a donation of their choice), in a bid to boost revenue to maintain its operating costs, the museum announced last week.
The new fee will be compulsory for all visitors who are not members of the museum and who do not reside in the wider New York tri-state area, which includes the neighbouring states of Connecticut and New Jersey. The fee allows each guest a three-day pass including access to its additional venues – the Met Breur and the Cloisters.
